How better to learn than to teach?

CAPTS is "near-peer" program where high school students learn science, communication, presentation and teaching skills and then put their newfound knowledge to work by teaching Science Labs to K-5 classrooms.  The "Science Captains", aka the high school students, serve as role models and leaders for younger students in their communities.

Highlights of CAPTS program:

  • Science Knowledge

  • Communication Skills, verbal and written

  • Presentation Skills

  • Leadership Skills

  • Access to STEM professionals

  • "Near-Peer" teaching model benefits elementary
    high school students

CAPTS: Stage 2*
After completing the first stage of the CAPTS program, our Science Captains are encouraged to continue engaging in science leadership activities. Science Captains are invited back to serve as teaching assistants in the course the following year and to design and implement community science activities. Several students co-developed STEM Trading Cards.
